Kingsport Ballet offers classical ballet instruction to students from around the East Tennessee region, as well as Virginia, Kentucky, and North Carolina. We offer ballet, pointe and partnering, contemporary dance and jazz for ages 7 and up, dance movement for 3–6-year-olds, as well as adult ballet. Our primary classes are held at our spacious Kingsport studio. We also offer remote classes for some lower-level students in Johnson City through our partnership with Soluna Sage in downtown Johnson City.

Our artistic director, Leonid Flegmatov, is a graduate of the Bolshoi Academy and a former career dancer specializing in the Vaganova method of classical ballet. Other teachers round out the program, which is taught six days each week, from August through May. Children 7 years of age and below are placed by age. Older students and those with dance experience will be evaluated for class placement.

Tuition

Tuition is calculated for the entire year, August through May, and divided into equal monthly payments for convenience, however, some months are shorter and some are longer with regard to the number of classes. Holidays and breaks are all taken into account. Tuition may be paid monthly, per semester, or the entire year. We encourage taking makeup classes if a student misses due to illness. Students enroll for the year.

Evaluations

Evaluations are scheduled at a mutually convenient day and time. The student wears dance attire (girls wear their hair in a bun). The evaluation session lasts approximately 10 minutes. If the dancer is at pointe level the evaluation may last about 20 minutes.

Classes and schedule

Classes in the lower school are held one time per week. Once a dancer reaches level BIIB, ballet classes will be two times per week. In BIII, ballet classes are held three times per week. In the upper levels, classes are held Monday through Saturday.

FAQs

  • We accept new students year-round. To become a student at Kingsport Ballet, you can fill out the form here or email kingsportballet@gmail.com

  • Class levels are typically determined by age. As students get older, classes can also be determined by experience and skill. If you would like help determining your student’s class level, you may request an evaluation so that our teachers can gauge their current abilities and place them in the level that would best fit your student. Please email kingsportballet@gmail.com to arrange an evaluation.

  • Kingsport Ballet Company dancers are automatically included in our productions and will be cast during formally held auditions. Non-company KB students age 7+ and outside students may audition for a role in the Nutcracker each Fall. Auditions for our full-length Spring ballets are held each January and are open to dedicated area students.

  • Tuition is due on the 1st of each month. Enrolled students will receive an emailed invoice 5 days before the due date.
