Sergei Gorbatov is a native of St. Petersburg, Russia. He trained with the Vaganova Ballet Academy and Kirov Ballet and went on to perform the major classical and character roles in Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, La Bayadere, La Fille Mal Gardée, etc., with the Russian touring company of the city of Krasnoyarsk. Four years later he returned to his native city of St. Petersburg and joined the renowned Kirov Ballet. At this time he had the privilege of working with various well-known Russian choreographers, such as Natalia Dudinskaya, Oleg Vinogradov, Igor Belsky, Constantine Sergeiev, among others. Mr. Gorbatov has toured with the Kirov in the United States, Italy, Great Britain, Spain, France, Mexico, and other countries. He has been a guest instructor in various international summer programs in Brazil and Korea. With time, Mr. Gorbatov developed an interest in contemporary and character dance. In 1998 he left Kirov and went to the Malyi Theatre in order to further his experience in these dance forms. He then returned to the Vaganova Academy to work on pedagogy and has recently completed their graduate teacher’s program. He teaches character and historical dance for the professional students in the Academy. Kingsport Ballet welcomed Mr. Gorbatov as artist in residence during summer 2002 and 2003, and 2005, and as guest artist in Kingsport Ballet’s production of The Sleeping Beauty.
